Every pool owner in Atlanta knows the feeling. You top off the pool on Saturday, and by Wednesday the waterline has slipped below the tile again. Your first thought is probably evaporation, and sometimes that instinct is right. Georgia summers are hot, and pools genuinely do lose water to the air. Evaporation has limits, though. When the drop outpaces what the weather can explain, something else is going on, and finding it early can save you thousands of gallons of water, a swollen utility bill, and serious damage to your pool and yard.

How Much Water Loss Is Actually Normal?
Evaporation is constant, invisible, and bigger than most people expect. A typical pool can lose roughly a quarter inch of water per day to evaporation under the right conditions, and hot, dry, windy stretches can push that higher. Over a week, a quarter inch per day adds up to nearly two inches of waterline, which on a standard residential pool means hundreds of gallons vanishing into the air without a single drip escaping the shell.
Several factors drive the rate up or down.
Temperature difference between water and air. Warm water under cooler air evaporates fastest. Atlanta’s spring and fall, with warm days and crisp nights, produce surprisingly heavy evaporation, and heated pools amplify the effect dramatically.
Humidity. Dry air pulls moisture from the pool aggressively. Humid air slows the process, which is one small mercy of an Atlanta August.
Wind. Moving air sweeps away the humid layer that forms just above the water surface, accelerating loss. Exposed pools on open lots evaporate faster than pools sheltered by fences, trees, and screened enclosures.
Water features. Spillovers, waterfalls, deck jets, and fountains multiply the surface area exposed to air. Running features all day can increase evaporation substantially, and splash from features carries additional water out of the system.
Beyond evaporation, everyday use takes a share. Cannonballs, dogs, pool parties, and swimmers climbing out soaking wet all remove water. Backwashing a sand or DE filter sends water down the drain by design. None of that is a leak. A pool losing a quarter inch on a mild day, or a bit more during a heated-pool cold snap, is probably behaving normally. Losing an inch or more per day, day after day, in mild weather is a different story.
The Bucket Test: Your First Diagnostic Step
Before assuming the worst, run the industry’s classic experiment. The bucket test separates evaporation from leakage using nothing but a bucket and a marker, because water in a bucket evaporates at essentially the same rate as water in the pool, while only the pool can leak.
Here is the procedure. Fill a bucket with pool water to within a few inches of the top and set it on a pool step so it sits partly submerged, weighted with a rock or brick if needed. Mark the water level inside the bucket, then mark the pool’s water level on the outside of the bucket or on the tile. Turn off any autofill device so fresh water cannot mask the results. Wait 24 hours without swimming, then compare the two marks.
Matching drops mean evaporation, since both surfaces lost the same amount to the air. A pool level that fell noticeably more than the bucket level points to a leak. For a fuller picture, run the test twice: once with the pump running normally and once with the equipment off. Losing more water with the pump on suggests a pressure-side plumbing leak. Losing more with the pump off suggests a suction-side problem or a structural leak that drains regardless of circulation. Roughly equal loss either way often means the shell, liner, or a fitting is the source.
One more warning about autofill systems. An autofill quietly replaces leaked water around the clock, hiding the problem until a water bill or a soggy yard exposes it. If your pool has one, check your water usage history. A mysterious jump in consumption is often the first visible symptom of a long-running leak.
Common Leak Sources Beyond Evaporation
Once the bucket test points to a real leak, the hunt begins. Decades of industry experience, including plenty of it in metro Atlanta backyards, show that leaks cluster around a predictable set of suspects.
Skimmer Separation
The skimmer is the plastic throat at the waterline that pulls in surface debris, and the joint where it meets the pool shell is one of the most common leak points in any pool. Concrete and plastic expand and contract at different rates, so the seal between the gunite shell and the skimmer body works loose over the years. A telltale sign is water loss that stops once the level drops just below the skimmer opening. Dye testing around the skimmer mouth usually confirms the problem, and repairs range from a simple sealant fix to resetting the skimmer.
Returns, Fittings, and Light Niches
Every penetration through the pool shell is a potential leak path. Return fittings, where clean water jets back into the pool, can crack or separate from the shell. The pool light niche is another classic offender, since the conduit that carries the light’s cord runs through the wall and can allow water to escape behind the shell. Leaks here often show up as loss that stops when the water level reaches the top of the light or a return fitting. A trained technician uses dye near each fitting, watching for the telltale pull of dye into a gap.
Underground Plumbing Leaks
Pipes running between the pool and the equipment pad live underground, out of sight, in metro Atlanta’s clay. Pump shaft seals are a frequent failure point, and catching one early protects the motor from water damage.
Backwash and Multiport Valve Problems
Sand and DE filters use a multiport or push-pull valve to route water to waste during backwashing. A worn spider gasket or valve seat lets water trickle continuously down the backwash line even in normal filter mode. Because the waste line usually discharges out of sight, this leak can run for months undetected. Checking the end of the backwash line while the system runs takes ten seconds and catches the problem instantly. Water flowing from that line when you are not backwashing means the valve needs service.
Vinyl Liner Tears and Seam Failures
Vinyl liner pools around metro Atlanta face their own leak profile. Liners get punctured by toys, tools, branches, and dog claws, and seams can separate as the vinyl ages and turns brittle. Even a pinhole lets a surprising amount of water pass over weeks. Leaks also develop where the liner seals around skimmers, returns, lights, and steps, since the gaskets and faceplates at those penetrations loosen over time. Dye testing finds liner leaks, and small punctures can often be patched underwater without draining. A liner that has grown brittle and leaks in multiple spots is usually telling you replacement time has arrived.
Structural Cracks in the Shell
Gunite and shotcrete shells are enormously strong, yet they can crack. Hairline surface crazing in the plaster finish is cosmetic and common. Structural cracks are different: they pass through the shell itself and typically show up as a visible line across the floor or down a wall, sometimes with matching cracks in the surrounding deck. Metro Atlanta’s clay contributes here as well, since soil movement under and around the shell applies uneven pressure over the years. Ground settling, poor original compaction, and nearby tree roots add stress of their own. Structural cracks demand professional evaluation, because proper repair involves more than smearing sealant over the line. Spa and Water Feature Plumbing
Attached spas, raised walls, waterfalls, and spillways add plumbing runs and penetrations, and each one is another candidate. A spa that drains overnight while the pool holds steady points at the spa’s check valves, jets, or dedicated plumbing. Waterfall and feature lines often run outside the main circulation loop, so a leak there may only lose water while the feature runs. Isolating features one at a time, running each for a day while tracking the level, narrows the search efficiently.
Why Leaks Get Worse in Atlanta If You Wait
Ignoring a leak costs more than water. Escaping water saturates the soil around the shell and under the deck, and in Georgia clay that saturation causes swelling, followed by shrinkage when things dry out.
